A Timeless carriage house and Garage

All of our carriage houses and cart lodges are constructed with sustainably sourced, pressure-treated timber or oak depending on the style and finish you desire. Often known as an oak-framed garage, our carriage houses look great with oak framing, either just to the front or throughout.

As a barn-style building, a carriage house or car barn is highly flexible with either open parking bays, enclosed bays with double garage doors or a combination of both. We can even add a recessed front wall with a door and window to create a self-contained workshop. We offer a range of widths and lengths for garaging even the largest of 4x4 and SUVs, as well as providing storage space or workshop area. As we create each timber building to your exact requirements, you can design the carriage house you need.

Your carriage house can be finished with either traditional weatherboard or shiplap cladding, add windows, a side door or even a log store. Roofing options include cedar shingles and traditional tiles as well as modern and easy to maintain contemporary finishes.

Being based in Kent with more listed buildings than any other county, we know how important it is to design a good-looking carriage house that conforms to planning requirements and is sympathetic to the existing property. Built to last, we guarantee all of our timber buildings for 5 years.

Roofing Options

Our timber buildings are available with a range of roofing options. Below are the different types of roofing material that you can choose between. Most of our standard building specifications include Onduline or are finished ready for tiling by a roofing specialist.

Cedar Shingles
Cedar Shingles

Cedar Roof Shingles are a natural, stunning and easy maintenance roofing option.

Cedar Shingles

Cedar shingles add to the natural look of a timber building. They will weather naturally over time and blend into the background whilst requiring very little maintenance. As a natural material, other than the process of timber felling and delivery, this is the lowest carbon roofing option. We can install cedar shingles on any of our OTB2 and OTB3 buildings.

Onduline
Onduline

A durable and easy to install roofing option, onduline is ideal for stables and garages.

Onduline

Available in several colours, these corrugated sheets are made from recycled fibres that are then saturated with bitumen under controlled pressure and heat conditions. The result is a uniform, hardwearing roof backed by a 15-year manufacturers guarantee. The colours are impregnated into the material so do not require maintenance. The only thing you need to do is keep the leaves off and clear the gutters. This is our standard roof for stables as it has the ability to deaden the sound of rain.

Onduvilla
Onduvilla

Made from recycled fibres, Onduvilla is a lightweight, quick to install but durable roofing material offering a natural tile look.

Onduvilla

The sister product to Onduline, Onduvilla is similar in being made from recycled fibres but is in an overlapping tile format (installed as sheets). The roof is coloured with variations to replicate the look of a clay tiled roof. With a 15-year manufacturer guarantee, this lightweight roofing material is laid over a boarded roof and can installed on any of our building ranges.

Natural slate or clay roof tiles

Tiled Roof

Offering a traditional look, clay or slate tiles are ideal for complimenting surrounding buildings. All our OTB3 buildings (subject to pitch) are ready to receive a heavier roofing tile. As we install timber buildings all over the UK we prefer to do what we do best, timber buildings, and then you will need to instruct your own local roofer for this option.

Barn Hip
Barn Hip

A half hip roof

Barn Hip

A barn hip offers the benefits of a cutaway at the end of the roof with a barn-style gable end. A few reasons to consider a barn hip include allowing more light to pass over the building reducing the impact on your garden or neighbours or if planners are concerned about size and mass, this can be a compromise. We also like the aesthetic that a barn hip gives to a timber building.

Full Hip
Full Hip

A fully hipped roof is great option, particularly on larger buildings as the roof 'looks' smaller.

Full Hip

Visually, a fully hipped roof reduces the profile of a roof so that it looks smaller and more visually appealing.

Cladding & Lining

Many of our timber buildings are available with a choice of cladding as well as a number of internal lining options for walls and ceilings. Depending upon the specification you choose, some will be standard and some will be available for an additional cost.

Shiplap
Shiplap

Shiplap timber cladding is a treated softwood cladding with a clean profile

Shiplap

Shiplap cladding has an overlap and rebate that gives a naturally tight fit and a low profile. Sourced from a FSC certified supplier and pressure treated, shiplap is low maintenance. Treated shiplap can be painted or stained but this is not required.

Weatherboard
Weatherboard

Weatherboard cladding is well suited for a more traditional look, treated and ready for years of service

Weatherboard

Our most popular finish for carriage houses and oak framed garages, weatherboard has a tapered profile with each board overlapping the next in a traditional style seen on timber buildings for several centuries. Well suited to a country setting or period building, the boards are treated prior to installation and are sourced only from FSC certified timber suppliers. Weatherboard can be painted or stained but this is not required thanks to the preservation process.

Rockwool Insulation
Rockwool Insulation

Insulate your timber building

Rockwool Insulation

As amazing as wood is, adding a layer of insulation between the outer cladding and inner lining can make all the difference for comfort both in summer and winter. If you are planning to use your building as an office, workshop or studio this is highly recommended. We also find that classic car owners are keen to insulate garages and carriage houses to help regulate temperature during the colder months.

Roller doors are a great option for garaging and carriage houses that don't have a lot of space for garage doors to swing fully open, or if you want to avoid obscuring your curved bracing or if you just want the convenience and security of electrically operated doors.
